First Look: Manchester Airport’s New ‘Super-Terminal’ Costing £1bn

Manchester airport have revealed pictures giving passengers and local businesses a sneak peek at work going on, on their new terminal.

Dubbed a ‘super-terminal’, it’s been reported that the revamped area has cost £1bn and boasts the title of the region’s biggest construction project ever.

The site measures out at 900,000 sq ft and while we don’t yet have a building to examine or facilities to pore over, we are for the first time getting an idea of the scale of the work.

Currently the project is in the demolition and foundation stage and around 300 people are employed and actively working on site.

It is said that when the next stage begins, there could be up to 1,500 people employed with around 150 apprentices. Assurances have been given that a focus will be placed on hiring local young people and school-leavers and an on-site academy is already in action.

The new terminal is reportedly opening in 2020, with all work on site (including parking and access roads) planned for completion in 2023.

There have been some complaints from passengers about the current temporary facilities and gates at the airport. However Andrew Cowan, the airport’s CEO has insisted that the project is being completed as quickly as possible and is necessary to give the north the ‘world class international gateway’ it deserves.
