British Airways will be trialling facial recognition technology, at a number of self service check-in kiosks in coming months.
The airline recently revealed that they are investing heavily in technology and digital innovation over the next five years. This new bio-metric system is just one of a number of developments and announcements in the pipeline.
BA bosses previously stated that they are determined to improve passengers experience in airports. They will be the first airline to trial facial recognition and are hoping that, if successful, the new system will speed up the check-in and security process for travellers.
Passengers travelling through LAX (LA Airport) will face a camera, have their picture taken and the image will be compared with one take during the immigration process. This should negate the need to present a passport or boarding pass to staff.
British Airways have liaised with both the Customs and Border Protection Agency and the US government and will launch the new technology at three stands in LAX imminently. They are trialling similar bio-metric systems in Heathrow Airport, London also.
BA’s director of brand and customer experience Carolina Martinoli said: “Our customers want the ability to simplify and speed up their journeys through the airport, so we’re investing in the most advanced technology that will enable us to streamline our boarding process and further improve our punctuality.”
Mark Hulme, Sales Director at Beyond Business Travel said: “Innovation in the travel industry is like nothing we have seen before. Every week there is a new announcement and a new technology, designed to improve the travel experience for customers. One of our clients’ biggest complaints is the time it takes to make their way through the airport to the gate. Anything that removes this pain point can only be a good thing.”
