The government are stepping in to improve internet access on trains, across the UK.
New plans have been launched to improve WiFi connectivity at rail stations and on board trains. The Department for Transport and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport will join forces and push ahead the installation of fibre optic cables and mobile masts, closer to train tracks than the current infrastructure.
It has long been recognised that connectivity on trains currently can be patchy and poor, due to the distance between existing masts and the train lines. In fact recent research revealed that passengers would rather rely on their own 4G signal to work and check emails, than on trains ‘patchy’ wireless internet. Only 13% of those surveyed found the WiFi service to be good and 22% said that WiFi wasn’t even available.
This new project is part of the governments new 5G strategy, which aims to future proof and improve WiFi and internet access in all areas of the United Kingdom. A trial project with Network Rail looking at how to improve trackside connectivity will soon begin on lines between Manchester and York.
It’s been a contentious issue for the government, who were blasted last year for reneging on a pre-election promise, to offer fast and free internet to all rail users.
