Union Unite has announced that it is balloting staff at Gatwick Airport, over potential industrial action.
The organisation represents security staff, surface transport workers, firefighters, trolley supervisors and engineers at the London airport and has confirmed that strike action is being discussed at this stage.
Workers will begin to vote on Friday 23rd March and the ballot will end on 13th April. If the result is positive and members vote in favour of a walk-out, disruption could occur in late April.
The vote is being called after airport officials announced that they were offering all ground staff a ‘below-inflation’ pay rise for 2018.
Unite’s regional officer Jamie Major said: “Workers at Gatwick are disgusted with the company’s attitude. Their hard work means the company has achieved record profits, and they are dealing with record numbers of passengers, yet they have only been offered a real terms pay cut.”
Gatwick Strike Action for April 2018?
Strikes inevitably negatively airports, travellers and airlines alike, so Gatwick bosses will no doubt be taking the threat of industrial action seriously.
