5 Foods That Help Corporate Travellers Avoid Jet Lag

Recent research suggests that people who travel for work are more likely to get ill than their counterparts. Being away from home, failing to maintain a healthy routine and suffering from the effects of tiredness and jet lag are just some of the factors to blame for the frequently occurring maladies.

With jet lag being one of the biggest complaints from our own corporate travel clients, we have compiled a list of foods that can help you beat the tiredness, when you’re on your business journey.

5 Food To Help You Avoid Jet Lag

1: Water

It’s so tempting to succumb to a nightly glass of wine (or two)….if only to help you sleep in that strange hotel bed. However, studies suggest that jet lag is made worse by dehydration, so forgo the nightcap and settle for a bottle of water during your next trip.

2: Eggs

Tempted by a fried breakfast, or by a buttered bagel? Why not have a healthy omelette instead? Eggs are a great source of vitamin B12. This plays a role in regulating our internal clock and circadian rhythm. It can help induce wakefulness.

3: Carbs

This item may not be popular with fans of the Atkins Diet but if you are travelling abroad and are at risk of jet lag, it is worth considering pasta, potatoes or a bread product at dinner time. Carbohydrates make the sleep-promoting amino acid tryptophan more available to your brain and stimulates the release of insulin into the blood stream. One recent study found that higher insulin levels can induce drowsiness, which might be handy the next time you arrive in a strange country, at night, feeling wide awake.

4: Herbal and Fruit Tea

You’re feeling tired. You should be asleep but it’s in the middle of the day. The obvious solution is to down a caffeinated beverage. However, this can mess with your circadian rhythm and affect sleep later in the day. Instead opt for a herbal tea, ideally Chamomile, which can help promote a healthy sleep cycle.

5: Berries

Berries are packed full of vitamins and minerals. It’s no wonder they’ve been labelled a ‘super-food’! Rich in phytonutrients, antioxidants, fiber, and water, they are the perfect food for those at risk of jet lag. Eat before, during and after your trip.
