Travel Tips: Avoid the Free Wifi in These Airports

A Cyber Security company have released a report, which advises business travellers to exercise caution when connecting to free wifi in airports.

Laying out what they have found to be some of the most vulnerable airports and the ones most likely to see passengers being hacked, the company has issued some tips for those using the services.

After conducting extensive research, Coronet reports that travellers moving through San Diego International Airport stand the biggest chance of suffering a hack. This can lead to the installation of malware on your internet connected device, as well as data and identity theft.

Coronet also named several other airports which it judged to have insecure wifi networks including Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, John Wayne/Orange County Airport, Dallas Love Field, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Houston Hobby Airport, Boston Logan Airport, Sky Harbor International Airport and Southwest Florida International Airport.

Edel Doherty, Managing Director of Beyond Business Travel said: “We advise customers to exercise caution when connecting to wifi networks in airports, hotels, restaurants and other public spaces.”

“If they can avoid using free wifi, then that would be the preferable option. If wifi access is needed, then it is sensible to have security software installed on your device and take notice of any warnings it displays.”

“This is especially true for business travellers, whose laptops and phones will contain sensitive company data and whose firm could stand to face large fines if a breach were to occur.”
